I am a 32 yr old guy, with no criminal record, and physically very fit...I just wanted to know, what is the best or easiest way to become a police officer in my local town or a bordering town in my nieghborhood, which is in the suburbs of Chicago.
I have a 4 yr BA, but was wondering, if I have to do a police academy? and is this something that the police department itself sends me too, or do I have to do this on my own...My goal here is to one day make it to detective or undercover level status.

you have a good shot, but is this what you really want to do?
this is chicago pd's requirements: http://egov.cityofchicago.org/city/webportal/portalContentItemAction.do?BV_SessionID=@@@@0087148073.1195947605@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccfaddmilhdkehcefecelldffhdfhg.0&contentOID=536884045&contenTypeName=COC_EDITORIAL&topChannelName=Dept&blockName=Police%2FI+Want+To&context=dept&channelId=0&programId=0&entityName=Police&deptMainCategoryOID=
this is just a site for openings in illinois:

each city has it's own requirements so find the one you feel fits you or is close to you and apply. you will have to be sent to the police academy but they will pay you to go there.
good luck

yes you still have to go to the academy this is to learn all the rules, regulations and procedures. having a BA in most cases will get you to your goal of detective faster than without but pick up some on line courses in criminology to better your chances. 80% of the law enforcement agencies in the US have need for recruits so find one with the best benefits some are offering sign on bonuses and down payments for purchasing a house.

You sound like you have what it takes. And the degree will be helpful.
However, between now and the time you are scheduled for your oral interview, think of a reason other than, "I just woke up one day and decided I wanted to become a Police Officer."
They usually find that answer a bit too impulsive.

You have no record, a bachelor of arts, and you are physically fit. Many officers only have two years of college. It sounds like you are qualified.
If I were you I would apply at every small town around Chicago, or become a Corrections Officer to start out.
They all have to go to a police academy. I think they are between 6-16 week programs.

You must also have a good credit rating to get anywhere. If I was
you I would Go to the county sheriff department nearby and the local police department and just ask if they are hiring and if not just ask what the qualifications are . Good Luck!!

THE 4 YR DEGREE WILL HELP. BEING PHYSICALLY FIT WILL HELP. WANTING TO BE IS A PLUS.
REALITY IS THAT YOU HAVE TO BE TESTED FOR STATE EMPLOYMENT AND SOME COUNTIES AN APPLICATION WILL SUFFICE.
NOW YOU HAVE TO WAIT FOR AN OPENING TO BECOME AVAILABLE. AND YES YOU DO BY LAW HAVE TO GO TO AN ACADEMY TO BE TRAINED AND CERTIFIED BY STANDARDS AND TRAINING ACT.

Your question is difficult to answer because all departments are different, you should contact the departments you are interested in and they can advise you.
