I actually heard Richard Lederer, a liguist specializing in these old sayings, talk about this one years ago. He said that it has been shifted over the years and was originally, "You can't eat your cake and have it too," meaning that some things are mutually exclusive and require a definitive choice. You can either eat your cake or continue to have it. Btw, Lederers books, such as Anguished English, are really fun reading if you enjoy language and wordplay. He is also a very entertaining speaker.

It means that in life we have to make choices. We can't always have everything we want. For example, we can't have a husband or wife and also date other people.
