If it takes you five hours to paint a room, and it takes your friend 3 hours to paint the same room. How long would it take for both of you to paint the room together?

In one hour they would paint 1/5 + 1/3 of the room, or 8/15 of the room, so in two hours they would paint all the room - 16/15 of it. So they would paint the whole room in just under two hours.

I would say only 2 hours, because you would subtract 5 from 3, and you would get 2 for the answer. I've painted rooms before and it doesn't take 3 or 5 hours.

4 hours I believe......you will slow your friend down by 1 hour but his help will speed you up an hour. I'm just spiliting the difference by mean times.
