Clear out the freezer and buy as much stuff as you can that will fit, about 2 weeks early. Same with canned goods and non-perishables. Try the persishables about a week out, look at the dates on milk, eggs, cream to see if they'll last. Unfortunately the last minute things will be fresh veggies. And that's what everyone does, waits until the last minute.
I just ran into this for Thanksgiving. There was nothing in the store the day before, they were shelled out. And they were still shelled out today. Pick as much stuff up as you can before the last minute people!

For cheap treats go raid the supermarkets on Christmas eve! You can get a frozen Turkey for a couple of quid but then again they may be hard to find in the 1st place cause' of the bird flu.
Go night stalking in the supermarkets as there will be less people around but also less cashiers.
For real quality produce order it from a greengrocer and pick up as arranged. You will pay a bit more but then its quality food

Start by checking the weekly food flyer from now until the week of x-mas. Buy only what you want that is on sale, or base your menu by what is on sale. Have a great meal and save at the same time. Last minute shopping for holiday meals can be expensive

Do your shopping 3-4 days before christmas. It's the best time to prepare your food. and it's a good time to let your food sit out..so it tastes best when you cook it

I would go on the Saturday evening before Xmas. After 8pm, it will probably be really quiet.

Anywhere between 2 and 3am is good if you live near a 24-hour supermarket. We do it like that every year now, we breeze round and get all the help we need from the staff, fantastic!

3 days before hand
I am a night owl. Try shopping really late, and you will encounter clear aisles and no lines.

I get all my goodies a couple of weeks before, then all the rest (fresh stuff- veg and meat) a couple of days before christmas.
