The majority of people who use check cashing facilities have no bank account, may be illegal immigrants, may not have adequate identification to prove their identity, or do not get paid in time to use banking facilities. So the access to money is through check cashing stores , some of which charge a percentage of the amount of the check being cashed. A section on the main street through Harlem to Central Park in New York had more check cashers than there were grocery stores.

They usually either do not have a bank account, which is needed to get a check cashed for free, or they are not able to get to a bank in normal business hours.

Most banks do it only for depositors. Some go to a check cashing place because they have no bank deposits and cannot do it for free.

You think that is bad, a friend of mine uses one of those title loan joints. She pays 360 PERCENT INTEREST! How in the hell is this legal?? She borrowed $250 for 30 days and had to pay back the $250 plus $75 interest. $75 for 30 days!

Well, I belong to a local credit union, so when I travel my bank isn't always available. One time I used Amscot to cash a check.
