My son doesn't know how many kilos he should start off with for weight lifting. He is 17 and has just started. He wants to build up his mass. Also, he doesn't know how many sit ups he should do at once and how long to wait between each time he does his sit up exercises in order to build abdominal mass. If anyone knows about these exercises, please let me know, it would be much appreciated, thanks

the website below will help him with proper form and terminology. how much weight he can lift needs to be dictated by his form in that exercise. in terms of resistance training injury occurs as the result of using improper from not from lifting heavy loads.

if you really want to get him a nice gift for Xmas pick up a book on Periodization from Tudor Bompa. He is legendary in the field of athletics and strength training.

Given his age, I think I would let him meet with a personal trainer for at least a couple of sessions to get him started, emphasizing proper form, repetitions, etc.
Sit ups/crunches do help with tone, but in order to have a 'six pack' diet is a key factor.

YOUR SON IS A LITTLE YOUNG TO BE LIFTING HEAVY WEIGHTS AS HIS BONES ARE STILL GROWING HE SHOULD DO PLENTY OF LIGHT LIFTING I.E MORE LIFTS LESS WEIGHT . HE CAN DO AS MANY SIT UPS AS HE CAN MANAGE BUT START OFF WITH 30 THEN REST BUILD IT UP SLOWLY. HE WILL GAIN MUSCLE BY JUST USING HIS BODY WEIGHT AS A REISTANCE.
CHINS PRESS UPS SQUAT THRUSTS SIT UPS ROPE SWINGS AND CLIMBS ETC ETC BUT HE SHOULD ALWAYS BE SUPERVISED FOR HIS OWN SAFETY
