Males can be a bit more needy than a female who can be more independent. Both, males & females are great dogs and all have their own personalities. The way you bring them up has a lot to do with it as well. All the best;~)

Unlike most other breeds, the male border collie tends to be a bit more laid back than the female. The female can be a bit more "sharp".

I have both sexes and for me the boys are easier to deal with, but then it is all relative, without the right amount of exercise and mental stimulation both male and female will be tortured souls.

I love my dogs and I'm sure they all think a lot of me but given the choice of sitting in the house with me or being out side doing a job I know which all of them would choose every time!

Male Border Collies are much more straight-laced and predictable. It's not hard to figure out what's on a male Border Collie's mind and how to deal with it. Once you figure them out and learn how to deal with them, they are actually quite simple. Their thought processes are straightforward and even-keeled. What you get one day is unlikely to change the next. They may not achieve the same moments of "excellence" or "fits of brilliance" as the females but their levels of performance are routinely very good. If they were gymnasts, they would score consistent 9.7s across the board, every day. Females go from 10.0s to 8.4s, all in the course of one sequence.

Males tend to be more pushy and dominant, females tend to be softer. Males tend to like to cuddle more, females can go from lap dogs to hermits in a matter of a short time. Males tend to be more physical with their actions - if they want your attention, for example, they come up and nudge you. Females find some other way to get you to pay attention, like doing cartwheels off the furniture or stealing trash from out of the can. Males use their body to get what they want - females use their minds. Most of the problem dogs in rescue are females. We have a lot of dominance problems with males but they are often far worse in intensity in the females. People with females tend to either have an angel or a nightmare (sometimes in the same dog!). People with males have middle-of-the-road "typical" problems.

After they are neutered you will not notice a great deal of male/female different. The difference will be in their personalities and that is their genetic coding. They are working dogs and tend to be independent and self starters and busy dogs. They need a job and that I think is why they make such great agility and Frisbee dogs. They need something to do and they MUST BE WALKED EVEY DAY.
If you are selecting one as a puppy. see if it will let you hold it in your arms on its back?, can you cuddle? and hold it down without a fight? See how it act if you examine eats and teeth and feet and pads. A dog that will let you do that is normally a good loving animal and not a pack leader. If you get a fight from the above you are dealing with an independent thinker and you will have to fight to be pack leader.

Female dogs tend to be more aloof, and they are also more focused and businesslike and tough and bossy. They are more liable to try to work their way up the pack order, and often are more likely to fight than males. The head dog in a pack is most often a female for those very reasons.Girls were cuddly and sweet, boys more independent and harder to manage.

Other than anatomy, i can't say i know first hand. I know a border collie who belonged to my neighbors, (and thought of as my own too) thought she was the queen and the world "revolved" around her. Well sorta anyway. She was cute as the dickens, god rest her soul.

Of course, all dogs are different but in my experience, male dogs arent as quick to get things, but once they do they are more likely to do them. My girls are always "smarter" than my boys but they dont listen as well.
