we have 5 kids, 11, 8, 6, 6, 5. Usually we spend about 1000-1500 total. we usually do not spend an even dollar amount per child, just end up with the same amount of gifts. this usually because the older kids want more expensive gifts.

I am a 28 year old single mom of a 7 year old daughter. I usually spend no more than $400. It's different when you only have one child but if I had more then I would have to say I would spend around $150-$200 each. It all depends on how much you can afford. I am also the youngest of 10 children. My parents told me that for x-mas (back then) they spent about $125 on each one of us. I guess it all comes down to figuring out how much money you really have to spend and divide it between them.

My husband has 2 now adult kids (21 & 22) from his first marriage and we have a 3 year-old. We usually spend $200 each, but this year my husband has been out of work since June and I am working 4 jobs and we are still struggling. We are only spending maybe $50 - $75 each this year on their big presents and maybe another $25 on smaller ones.

Depends on your budget. If you want to save money, wait until the last minute to shop. Whenever I start too early, I accumulate TOO many gifts, including some stupid ones that I later regret. And if your kids get TOO many gifts, they won't appreciate them as much, either (thus, "spoiling" them). It's best to give them each one or two GOOD gifts (from you parents). I would also encourage them to buy gifts for each other, one small gift each, even if they have no money yet and you have to give them the money. (My kids have newspaper or babysitting money starting age age 12, so then they spend that money on loved ones, though I pay for their friends' birthday presents). They'll enjoy choosing a gift, and it encourages them to give. (Of course, they should also buy/make a present for the parents.) It's not so much how much you spend, but how you spend. But since you did ask for a dollar amount, I'd say 5 kids probably cost at least $200 altogether from the parents (if you can afford it), at $40 each. If you can't afford it, try to get them something for $10 or $20 each, and hopefully something that they've wanted for a long time. Good luck!

teach them to be wise.
give them 25 dollars each. and ask them to give some part to their brothers, minimum is 1 dollar. nobody has to know how much one gave to the other.
after that.
go to some charity/foundation whatever, and explain to them how they can help, not just by money but by actual work and have them buy something for the orphanage.
part 3:
go to some department store and have them buy something for themselves.
i should expect you will get some positive results with this. teach them to be better persons not selfish persons.
