Just out of curiosity, can you tell me what the second word in the phrase 'pellet gun' is? That is akin to asking what the best Dodge Intrepid is, but only one that isn't a Dodge. And defending yourself with a pellet gun is a terrible idea. In most, if not all, states, threatening someone with a toy gun will have the same legal consequences as a real gun, and you can be charged just as harshly for peppering someone with pellets as you can be for shooting them. In all honesty, if you want to defend yourself without a gun, you'd be better with a can of mace or a taser, and a good pair of running shoes. That would buy you valuable time to run away. Pointing a toy gun at someone is either going to get you shot or sued. It seems to be happening more and more frequently that someone tries something with a pellet gun and gets killed. It's sad to see it in the news, but really, they're getting what's coming to them. Don't let the next one be you.

Ok, but if you really, really want to defend yourself with a pellet gun, there are some precharged large caliber models available. The only chance you'd have would be with something larger, like this: http://www.airgunsbbguns.com/Career_Dragon_Slayer_Air_Rifle_50_cal_p/shin-sung-career-dragon-50.htm

With a pellet gun, all you will achieve is to make the person who's been on the prison fitness plan angry enough to kill you. Shooting with anything less than a .32 ACP (not a .32 S&W a/k/a .32 short) probably means they will take the gun away from you and kill you with it. Whatever you do, DON'T hold a handgun at arm's length. Hold it close to your body, fire and run like hell and if possible, keep firing until the magazine is empty, thus eliminating the possibility of being killed by your own gun.
Unless you have something that can actually kill or incapacitate your target with one shot. Then shoot the attacker and call the police. They will want to know what happened. Small caliber, go for head shots. Body shots will not likely be lethal.

You couldn't. A pellet gun would not replace a real firearm for self defense. In fact, I would rather use a pocket knife over a pellet gun for self defense.

Although tazers are a good alternative to going hands on with someone who is failing to comply with an arrest and many times effective that was a result of hours of training and retraining each year and being in a situation where most times we had the time to work through a force continuum with a subject who normally had some level of hesitation due to facing a police uniform backed up by other methods of force including extensive defensive tactics training, a baton and a side arm as well as back up on scene or on the way. Having been tazered in training, 50K volts, and watching all my comrades "take the ride" I can tell you I would have been able to be on my feet and a threat within 10 seconds following the 5 second pulse period and I would definitely be pissed off at that point. Pepper spray applied to the face is very effective and often will disable someone long enough to "get away" or in our case gain control of a subject but almost always impacted the user and other officers assisting, especially in closed areas as would be likely in a residence. Pepper Spray canisters also have to be inspected annually and usually replaced after a year or so to avoid the possibility of a leak or "misfire". Again training and exposure gives the advantage if you do get a dose while using it for defense. If you chose this option you should be exposed and then see what is involved in being able to fight through such a scenario or even effect an escape. The use of a firearm against say a home intruder requires careful consideration as most calibers capable of stopping a person are also capable of traveling through sheet rock walls and killing a family member or neighbor in an adjoining room. Then there is the issue of securing the weapon in your residence and then having instant access. The secret to all self defense is training through determining what method will work best for you whether it is run away, get away as taught in Wahin Ryu style of Japanese Karate, hand to hand combat with an edged or blunt force weapon or use of any type of projectile weapon. The will to win and the indomitable mindset are key as well as the muscle memory and physiological will established through practice and repeated visualization of likely encounters/responses. Bottom line is I saw some exceptionally well trained, pretty tough guys who put on body armor before going to work piss their pants in an assault The impact of the adrenalin dump that will take place in a self defense situation must be felt and understood as it will greately impact the outcome of any attempt at self defense. Choose what you are comfortable with, learn the limitations and then train, train train until you are proficient. I am pretty confident I could easily defend myself with a .177 caliber weapon, if I trained with it, because my training and experience will give me an edge, experience and confidence you can gain from practice and training to defend yourself and your family. When the you know what hits the fan, training and muscle memory combined with a strong will to dominate will be what gets you through, not any particular weapon.

A Gamo or RWS pellet rifle are more than powerful enough to kill an adult person. However, I would highly recommend against that small of a caliber, you can get ~.50 air guns used for hunting at reasonable prices, and they will have the power to reliably kill any known land creature.
You can see one of them here: http://www.bigborebob.com/

However, I would not recommend an air rifle for self defense, they can only shoot one time and then have to be reloaded.

Pellet guns are not meant for defense purposes. I would not use one in a possible gunfight with real guns.
