A lot is because some people have a much better plan going in than others do, and are more focussed in working to their plan.
Some businesses are started with not enough money, so the owner can't hang on until the become successful even though they might have if they had lasted longer.
And of course there's also some luck involved.

The most important thing for any business is Marketing, which is the science of making a product known to its target market.
Lets say you have a fantastic product which is ideal for every housewife, there is no point in marketing it to retailers, you must show the housewife what the benefit it will have for her.
This is where so many businesses fail, they tend to point out all the great things that the product has, so many such and such, 2 internal doodles and 3 whatsits. But in fact people don't buy anything for its such and suches, doodles or whatsits, they will buy it because of how it can benefit them, now if you said that this product can wash, dry and iron anything automatically, then you will get the attention of probably every woman in the world and quite a few men as well.
There are other reasons why business fail, lack of cash flow is the usual one, but again that probably comes back to poor marketing.

Thats depends on the product or service being in the right place at the right time for the demand to be there.
Niche products and services tend to do somewhat better than a general service/product.
