As a Theistic Satanist, I can see the idea or concept of Satan in just about every religion. This leads me to believe that Satan has existed long before and outside the simple confines of the Abrahamic religions.
I'm a polytheist, and I don't think that any of the Gods and Goddesses we worship are "cosmic" deities. I don't think that Satan created the world anymore than I believe the Christian God did. I think that because of the things that Satan represents, and has always represented and encouraged, he was chosen as the scapegoat for the Judeo-Christian belief structure. Hell and eternal torment is an entirely Christian creation ... its not even present in Judaism.
I certainly believe that Yahweh exists, but I think that all the ideas of him being the creator God and being all-powerful and almighty were simply developed by his followers. I don't think that he and Satan are adversaries and I'm not in anyway trying to overthrow him.
So if Satan has appeared in many forms and in many different ways, why do we choose to refer to him as Satan? I can only speak for myself, but I felt 'called' by a particular deity, and he identified himself as Satan. He may have chosen to identify himself this way because I've always had a slightly rebellious streak. :)
I hope this clarifies things for you some, and if you have anymore questions, you can always e-mail me. I don't mind freely discussing my beliefs, especially with someone as respectful as you.

Satanists don't actually believe in Satan. They're actually atheistic, and worship the Self. They view the biblical Satan as an allegory or metaphor. They admire Satan, although they believe he is no more than a myth, because to them he is a symbol of self-indulgence, carnal pleasure, intelligence, and nonconformity.
Theistic Satanists who believe that Satan is a literal figure are usually not educated on true (LaVeyan) Satanism. They wrongly assume that it is inverse Christianity. True Satanists are actually ashamed of them because they feel that the Theistic Satanists give them a bad name. Some (NOT ALL) Theistic Satanists are the kind that commit crimes in the name of the "devil," torture animals and children, etc., which goes completely against "The 9 Rules of the Earth." Theistic Satanists are very, very rare, so they are really nothing to worry about.
btw, I'm not satanist, I've just read up on the subject. :-)

Perhaps this FAQ below may be of help to you...
I know that some theistic Satanists believe that the God now called Satan has been around longer than that particular name and was called different things in the past, such as Set (the Egyptian God). Set (or Seth) was a "troublesome" God in Egypt and often thought of as "bad" while Osiris, for example, was "good."

Satanists don't worship Satan, but what the mythological character stands for in Christianity; knowledge, nonconformity, not suppressing yourself, etc.
Devil worshipers worship a dark divine being that they believe exists.

I think it is really going to come down to the *individual satanist* what he or she believes and how they come across. You just can't pigeonhole these types of people. The one around me has taught me so much, God Bless him. He claims to be an "athiest" yet uses magick (he won't tell me where he thinks the source is coming from) and gets mad at God for butting in on our fights. Doesn't quite make sense to me. I think he believes in a being that some people ID as satan but he doesn't worship it. He just isn't the type to worship anyone other than himself. He is tall dark handsome and dangerous. In fact reminds me of the Cole character on that stupid show "Charmed." He would rather reign in hell than serve in heaven, of course, it is still hell. So, I only keep him around for the sex. I could lose my wings for that (;

I've talked to a few theistic Satanists. Most are polytheistic and don't view Lucifer the same way the Christians do. They see him as the Morning Star, the bringer of knowledge. That is actually very similar to my take away from Genesis.
The guys I met did believe in the Christian God, they just didn't think he was nearly as important as the Christains.

they view Satan as a combination of pagan deities, Pan, cernunos, Baphomet, renamed an villainized by christianity--This way they don't have to believe in the christian god in order to worship the energy behind these godheads in what they view to be his most modernized form

hmm.. from what i understand about satanism, it does not worship "lucifer" that the bible talks about. Instead they worship the "devil" in all of us - basically understanding anger, hate and deception.
all to do with the dark side of human nature.
