Sign up for the H&R Block Tax Course or a similar course offered by someone else so that you can learn the basics. In my state, California, basic tax preparers have to take a 60 hour class and pass an exam before being licensed and then take continuing education to keep the license valid. You would operate at a professional level if you took classes to pass the Special Enrollment Examination to become an Enrolled Agent.

If you started a business preparing taxes for the general public, you'd be amazed at how many twists come up compared to doing your own or some for family and friends. If you don't have substantial formal training, don't even think about it.
