8-9 WT that has an aluminum reelseat.

Make sure to have a decent aluminum reel with a good drag system, (You don't want to get spooled by that 20 LB Red because you've got a "mickey-mouse" reel).

Clousers in white/green, white/gold, white/red, Chartruese, Gold and Crystal are #1,(in my opinion!).They are inexpensive and most everything, (excluding perhaps Permit or Bones), will hit them!

"Critter Flys" like Umpqua's "Andersons McCrab" or "Crazy Charlies" work well for Shallow-water Reds and Trout.

You can also try "Decievers", "Bend Backs", & "Cockroaches", Etc.

Poppers and "Foam Flys" work excellent for Trout.

If your a Fly-tying guy you can EASILY make some Clousers and save yourself a ton of money. After you lose 4-5 Clousers,(which go for about $3-$5 a piece in a Flyshop), to Spanish Macs or Trout you start thinkin' it would be cheaper to BUY a fish dinner than to try and catch one! (lol)

Realize, Reds & Trout aren't as "picky" as freshwater Trout/Salmon. Bendbacks, Decievers, Etc can & WILL work but they aren't cheap and you lose them just as quick as any other fly!

Colors: Variations of Gold, Chartruese, White, Red work well.

Hope this helps ya? Good luck!

You need a 9 wt for this with a middle to tip action, sage has the best on offer with the ability to fight a good fish, for flies i like the shrimp or crab imitations work well. You will need a good strong tippet for these so dont go under 10lb when its likely the fish are a good size, most of these flies work
