You just missed a nice one, the X-Country Marathon in Florida, in a rural area outside the Tampa area, it's on dirt and very low key.

The problem you'll encounter is that big marathons draw all the attention, and much of the quality organization. They hold your hand: aid stations every mile, all the roads closed, intersections blocked, nice shirts, nice expos, etc.

Smaller you get, the less you get.

I ran the Cherry Blossom Marathon in Macon, Ga., it was okay, but the roads were open, we had to run along side the roads while trucks rolled past. I ran the (defunct) Gulf Beaches (Clearwater, Fla) marathon, and they ran out of water and didn't have near enough bathrooms at the start.

I'm sure there are great rural or smaller ones. Grandma's Marathon in Duluth, Minn. is quite famous. And the Boulder Backroads (colorado) gets high marks.

But what you really might be pining for is trail races. The 50k (31 miles) is a common distance, and they are unheard of on roads, instead 50k, 50-mile and 100-mile races favor rolling hills and trails, often in some wonderful, wild locales. Make no mistake, you're on your own out there, aid stations every 5 miles or so, so carry your own water, and as they say, "no wimps, no whiners" but they aren't as intimidating as they sound, and if you're trained for a marathon, you'd be fine in a 50k, just slow down a tad. Give it a shot. Ultrarunning Magazine has a nice calendar, broken down by region. Give it a try. Honestly, you can do this.

How about the Napa Valley Marathon on the first Sunday in March? The run travels through the scenic Napa Valley wine country north of San Francisco. I've run it several times and thoroughly enjoyed it.

This is their website:
