as a joke, and i thought it was obvious i was joking, i asked a friend of mine to marry me. she said yes but i thought she was just adding on to the joke so i went along with it
now i think she really thinks we're getting married

You tell her. NOW. Admit that you are in error, let her be mad, and expect that she'll give you greif for years to come, assuming your friendship will hang on for that long. Tell her BEFORE she tells all of her family and friends. Before she dreams about her dress and the reception. Weddings are big deals for most female-types, and you're going to dash her dreams. You should also pray (or meditate, or think good thoughts, or contemplate, or consider) that she doesn't kill you.

Assuming you're not a troll, the only thing you can do is be honest with her as soon as possible. The longer you let things go, the worse it will get.
This is, of course, assuming you don't just decide to marry her to avoid embarrassing yourself.
