Is this a new craze? it could be the sickest thing ive heard in a while. Almost as sick as getting dogs voice boxes removed so they can't bark. Taking away that animals rights to behave in a way that is normal and natural is absolutely absurd. It is up to the pet owner to decide whether their home is suitable for a cat (ohh i love my antique furniture too much or i live in a rented apartment, the landlord would be annoyed if the cat scratched the carpet/doorframe etc). It is not up to us to remove their body parts. Anyone who does this and replies to this qwuestion is sighning up for some abuse, courtesy of me, sorry!

Unfortunately some people do not understand what is means to de-claw. They do not realized that the toes are actually amputated at the next joint. It is painful and miserable and leave the cat with some personality problems.

Some people value their furniture more than their cats security. I wonder why people want to have babies with their animals when we destroy animals everyday because there are not enough homes. And why they don't neuter them when the animal is more comfortable and healthier when they have been neutered.

People have it done if the animals are behaving badly. We had our cats claws removed and she was on anesthesia so she felt absolutely nothing and she was fine. We had OUR cat get this surgery done because she was hurting our baby kitten that we had just bought,Angel. We felt terribly sorry for her but it was almost as if she had no idea what happened to her because she still tries to bat at the kitten and she uses her scratching post like she did before. I think it is inhumane in a sense but it is a surgery that can help them. She is also an indoor cat and has never been outside since she was a kitten when we brought her home from the shop.Well she goes to the vet but that isn't quite the same. Princess [ the cat that had the operation ] is okay and I feel the surgery made her and the small kitten closer because now the kitten isn't afraid of her. We will have the same surgery performed on the kitten,Angel, when she is of age so it is fair. - Michelle

Thank you for that question, I am sick of people abusing their pets to make them suit their lives - instead of either adjusting their lifes to the respective pet, or not have any pets at all.

I am not in for verbally abusing people who do (and neither should you, btw), but it is just not necessary. Even the case mentioned above is just not necessary. Make sure your settled-in cat gets enough time to get used to the new arrival and you won´t have to remove claws. We "inherited" a cat from my grandma and took it to our house - of course, the settled-in cat will go up the walls and try and attack the new cat, that is another cat invading their district, what did you expect? Suppose some strange smelling stranger just moved into your house without asking you for permission, ate your food and used your bathroom. Would you agree to having somebody bind you to the kitchen chair and tape your mouth shut so you can´t chase him out or ask him to leave....?

If it doesn´t work out, you might have to take the new cat back, as sad as that is. Removing cats´ claws is the same crazy manner than breeding cats with no fur so you don´t have to clean so often - or breeding small dogs that usually develop cancer, die early of "natural" causes or get serious joint problems, just so you can carry them around in your handbag instead of having to go for extra walks.

Pets are fine, as long as you can have them live in appropriate conditions, as you (asker) mentioned. I think keeping cats and dogs indoors exclusively is a form of animal cruelty. Sorry.
