My Brother started out with the wooden ones but they had a foam padding. It's the best of both worlds- the realism with some safety. Although eventually the foam wears out, but hopefully by then you get the hang of it and don't accidentally hit yourself anymore! Be careful and practice, practice, practice! Also you might want to invest in a helmet, just in the beginning til you get a feel for it. Have fun, nunchakus are cool!

Shureido makes the best nunchaku in the world. They are very expensive and hard to deliver into the US for obvious legal reasons.

As far as building muscle is concerned... uhh nuh! Great workout though!
