My priority is to rip clips from home recorded DVD+/-R (rather than from copy protected discs) to a suitable file format for compiling and/or editing home movies which I can then burn to a new DVD. Something that is free/cheap and relatively easy to use as a novice would be great.

As you may or may not know the standard Commercial DVD Movies are Video-TS. There are so many different Formats that the different applications use. You may want to leave some and in other cases you may want to change these formats to a standard versions that can be viewed on all players and computers. With some formats you are not so lucky. Here is a link that will help you understand the difference in the Formats that are used. This can be overwhelming to a user not familiar with Video, take your time and scroll down through this and it will help you to understand.

Next you will need a Software that will enable you to change formats.

There are several different Softwares available that will preform this function, If you don't cre for the one I furnish you can Google and choose another. Remember there is going to be a small learning curve as there is with any new software. Oh there is one last thing, You will find that using DVD-R Media that is high quality will play in anything, Read the packaging, I use Maxell 16X DVD-R Media.
This Media will play and burn in older and newer Optical Drives and will burn a 1X, 2X, 4X, 8X, 16X, other medias will not do this. I prefer to buy the 5 pack in individual jewel cases the quality is much higher.
