A promise ring is like a pre-engagement ring.... He promises to stay faithful to you, and that when you are both older and ready, he will put a better ring on that finger...there is not specified time in a relationship when you do this. And not all couples do this. Its more common in younger couples, and I've seen it many times usually after graduating high school, when they're going to different colleges but are going to try and stay together.

The meaning behind a promise ring is, a promise in your relationship to stay true to one another, hence the the name. Not many people have a promise ring but a guy chooses to do so, he should give it to his girlfriend when there is a TRUE COMMITMENT TO EACH OTHER but it is to soon to become engaged and married. I definitely think it should be given later in the relationship...not after like 6 months or anything because how do you HONESTLY know if there is a TRUE commitment in that short of time? (Think about how many people have dated for 6 months or even a year and then break up?)

The meaning behind a promise ring is to promise the girlfriend that one day when he is ready he will take the next step and propose to her and then one day marry her. And as for when the girl should receive it, that's totally up to the guy... usually a year or two into the relationship... from what I have experienced.

The way I understand it, a promise ring means the man is promising to get engaged to the girl in the future. As far as when in the relationship the man gives one to the woman, it's whenever he feels that he is ready to tell her he'd like to marry her.
Personally I'm not in favor of promise rings. I have known very few people who received promise rings from their boyfriends, and then went on to marry them (or stay married to them). Sometimes I think the guy uses the promise ring to placate the girl. He knows she wants to get married, so he gives her the promise ring so she thinks he's serious about her, but he's really not ready to commit to marriage. If he was, why not just give her an engagement ring? They could always have a long engagement if money, finishing school, or anything else was an obstacle. Or just wait to get engaged. If you truly want to marry someone, nothing will stand in your way.

a promise ring is a promise of engagement. it is supposed to be more expensive thatn the engagment ring (this is because the female keeps this ring no matter) but less expensive than the wedding ring. A promise ring is given when a couple is ready to take the next step in a relationship but just aren't ready to make the promise of marriage. (Which an engament ring is. ) it is up to the couple about when to give a promise ring. hopefully this helped you.

from what iv heard about promise rings is that there simlar 2 wedd rings without the marriage vows they promise 2 be wiv you always. they usually give a ring when they want 2 show how much they love you x
