There are a couple of different things that help. For me, evaluating my anxiety on a numerical basis is the best thing. I say, well this is not a 10, and I have survived 10's before. This is only a 5 or a seven or whatever, so I know I can survive this. Also, concentrate intensely on the present, what the things are around you, what their colors and textures are, etc. And also sometimes concentrating on something silly that you can't really think about will break the cycle. Like say to yourself, "I'm going to think really hard about purple." Not purple things, just purple.
You can cope without medications, but if you find yourself tending towards being afraid to leave the house, get help before you lose control.

I just start having anxiety a month ago.. and its hell i wouldnt wish this on anyone... but what i'm doing is trying St.John Worts, taking "B" vitamins and drinking chamomile tea... I'm scare of taking medication myself from the horror stories.
I also brought a hypnosis cd by Andrew Weil.. it totally calmed me down and also Kava is suppose to be good for calming down.. "havent tried it yet"
but keep trying different things.. When go to a doctor first thing they want to do is throw you on Meds... But keep hanging in there ...

Take a deep breath. When you feel anxious, go to a quiet place and just relax for a few minutes. The most important thing to do is take it one step at a time!
