Well the cable company is not renting you a box, a remote, etc. All these electronics are in your TV if it has a cable card slot.

(Would you really want to pay the $5-$15/month that people pay for a cable box when they are just giving you a card?)

I have 2 friends who have gotten the new Tivo HD units with cable card slots to time-shift HD programming. With this, about the only thing you miss out on is pay-per-view (which I never use anyway).
