I am looking in to buying a smaller car. Which one has better reliability, safety features, and gas mileage?

Well, honestly the Elantra is better in every way. It's bigger, more powerful, better warranty, better crash results/more airbags and safety features and has a better reputation for reliability and equal gas mileage. Its really not a fair comparison because the Hyundai Accent is the real competition for the Aveo, the Elantra would compete with the Cobalt(next step up). I notice that the Aveo only comes in Manual transmission, so that could be a problem for you. Personally I'd never buy an Accent or Aveo new, I'd rather spend the same money on a 2 year old Elantra/Cobalt or 3 year old Sonata.

I have the Elantra . Very reliable and rides very smooth. I don`t think the Aveo compares . Like others say compare it to the Hyundai Accent. And I think the Accent would be a better choice. Hyundai reliability has vastly improved over the years , they are now rated very well in reliability ratings by consumer groups.

They're not even the same class of car. If you want to compare apples to apples, you want to compare the Hyundai Accent against the Chevrolet Aveo.

Well, first of all, both are Korean. Yes the Chevy is a rebadged Daewoo. Both cars will serve you well for a while. But sadly, both will have the worst resale value of any other make out there. Try to look into a Nissan Versa or Toyota Yaris. Both of them will last a lot longer, have better reliability and better resale. And they won't cost a great deal more than the 2 cars your looking at. I've worked on my sisters 2004 Chev Aveo and she had to have the engine rebuilt at 70,000 miles. She took very good care of it, but it wasn't meant for daily hard city driving. She owed so much money on it compared to it's value. It was worth about 2,000 dollars at the time she finally got rid of it. Plz consider what I said & think carefully about them. Look at the web site I linked below.
