Excel 2007 won't let me merge cells?

Doing a class project and Excel suddenly won't let me merge cells. I saw something about a password in the help section, but I don't have any passwords applied. Help

If you select the cells, then click the "merge and center" button on the toolbar, you will receive a message that if there is data in the two cells, the data in the left cell only will be saved.

Looks like you should merge the cells before entering data.

If the "center" button is lit after you merge, just click the left align button.
