I'm considering a new PC with Vista but want to make sure my programs will run on it. Are there any that will not?

Most people don't bother to try compatibility mode, so there may be varying opinions on whether a program works or not. 99% of programs should work in Vista.

Almost every Windows XP program will work in Vista. Or certainly if it didn't updates for the program would be available.

you do not want vista. vista is the new windows me. look at macs. they are a good option for desktops or laptops. They are not cheap, but what you get is a very good value. You can install xp on them with bootcamp.

Some of them thats why most people are "upgrading" to XP.... it is more familiar and all of their old applications work on it... i have a MacBook and i dual boot using Boot Camp so i have XP and Leopard running.... so stick with XP..... or get a Mac and install XP on it... but if you dont like OS X stick with XP dont EVER go to Vista
P.S. Leopard is the new Mac OS... it is amazing
if you have a 2 yr plus printer.... it wont work
