For example, today the cashier yelled at me for filling up my shopping basket (the hand held kind). Apparently she didn't think it should be full like that, and that i have to use a push cart next time.
They also yell at you for myriad other reasons, and like to boss you around.
What has started this phenomenon of being rude to the customer? Is it because of foreigners working there, or younger people are like this, or they are trained this way or what?

If a cashier yelled at me, for filling my basket, I'd leave it on the counter and, after talking to the manager, about the rudeness of the cashier, leave the store, and make my purchases elsewhere.

Representatives are kind if customers are kind... and be understanding, sometimes people have bad days.

I work in customer service for credit cards and I do that when I know I will face a difficult situation, say when you have to stop the card or decline a purchase, If I am not mean and I am polite instead they yell at me they boss me and plus they want to speak to my supervisor and then I have more problems, beeing mean has helped me way too much with difficult situations, If customers were not that rude sometimes I´d be kinder as well,

It is not nice beeing like that for us either but sometimes is
needed, depends on the customer.

I actually am a cashier at a well known clothing store. Believe me, managers always tell us day in and day out that our number one priority is customer service. At the same time, we have to follow alot of policies that customers like and dislike (i.e. returns, shipping, theft, etc.). We get alot of customers who always want us to bend the rules just for them. Sometimes we do, somtimes we don't. Either way it gets us irritable because we lose money and get a verbal warning.

This 'phenomenon', as you put it, did not begin with the cashiers. It began with the CUSTOMERS and has since bounced back to the cashiers.

Haven't you noticed how rude, stupid, selfish, and dishonest customers have become lately?

I have.

I think that the cashiers are just ignorant. I for one am glad they are saying you should have a high school diploma before applying for any job. get these bitter losers out of customer service. It also depends on where you live and choose to do your business. It isn't because they are immigrants they are a product of their own jacked-up environment. Don't take it, be civil, but when they cross the line let them have it. It IS your money....

When I am treated like that, I always complain to the manager. But I always make sure that I'm very polite about it. I'm certainly not going to be the one to start yelling and making a scene.
