My mom had several surgeries and needs to go into rehab for 3 months or so in a skilled nursing facility. We are looking for a place between Waukegan and the Schaumburg areas. Is there anyone out there who knows someone, or better yet, is a resident of such a place, that can alert me to any precautions or problems? Or, if you are a resident, are you in a skilled nursing facility that you would highly recommend? Money is not a problem. I just want to make sure she is in a safe, comfortable, place where she will be well cared for. It is possible she might decide to reside at such a place if it is nice enough. Please help..... Thank you all so much.

This is one of the most difficult things for a child to do.

I went thru this with my dad..and you need to be VERY aware of the place you choose.

Contact the social worker at the hospital that she had her surgeries at. They should have some good recommendations.

Check out any place you are interested in online with the attorney general and IN PERSON before you agree to it.

Contact http://www.aplaceformom.com/ this is a referral service (the agencies pay their fee) to help place your mom.

If you can find a place that is progressive..ie...has the skilled nursing as well as assisted or independant living in the same community your mom may be more open to it and comfortable. especially if she is very coherent.

this way when she is done healing she can go into her own apartment where there is either a community to have fun in... (kind of like a cruise ship with activities for old people) or assisted living (if she needs help dressing/bathing..etc)

Good Luck!!!!

Also..if she is open to it..have her meet with an elder law attorney to protect her assets.

Nursing homes are a last resort, make sure it is one where they are very active with the patients, I am speaking from experience believe me, the patient needs be living life everyday or they will start down hill quick. Your Mom will need to see you as much as possible and you may have to push her beyond what she wants but you must if she is to get better. Just thinking about this question breaks my heart, Don't let them give up. Mine did. Good luck to you and God Bless!!
