Warning: This is a warning you are not gonna get from the dealers or the manufactures. LCDs have very fragile, very breakable PLASTIC screens. Screens because there are two. The "inner" screen of my 7 mos. old Sony Bravia 42" is broken. Broken by a 34 lb., 3year old throwing an empty plastic cup. Plastic because it can be and it prevents the screen from being reflective. It also makes them CHEAPER to make. No warranty, no repair. If you have children or children visit, do not buy LCDs.
Plasma have a glass screen like all other TVs except LCDs. Both are cheap to operate depending on where you live: 3-41/2 cents/hour for plasma and 2-3 cent/hour for LCD.
Plasma is better 42" or larger and in dark rooms or basements and for viewing sports. Most plasma brands also have anti-glare coatings. When I can get another $2000 together I will get plasma.

For picture quality and durability you should buy an LCD television.
Unfortuantely they're not reasonably available in sizes above 37". There are a few but they're very expensive.
For larger screens you're realistically limited to Plasma.
Modern plasma screens are very good indeed and much better than they were even 5 years ago.
Don't get obsessed about it.
In both cases the screen is only part of the system that gives you a picture. The electronics behind it make at least as much difference to your viewing pleasure as the screen construction itself.
The cheap "strange brand" sets that you see in supermarkets will always disappoint you within months; especially when you compare them with your friends' new Sony or Panasonic.
You're looking to buy something important that you want to last for about 10 years. Don't be tight fisted, it's not worth it.
For your interest. Neither of these screen technologies are anywhere near as good as a good quality CRT when it comes to colour depth, contrast ratio, resolution etc. unless you are watching a true HD source. Can't get CRT sets now though. Ah well, we are where we are...

Apparently plasmas can show deeper blacks which is a problem iv noticed while games on my lcd, when it gets dark the picture is never as good. LCD definitly though to answer your question. Plasmas have a thing called phosphorous burn in which is basically if your watching bbc alot you'll start to see the bbc logo permanently burned into your screen which means playing games on it would be a problem too.

We just had this discussion over Thanksgiving! Those of us who've had both seem to agree that LCD lasts longer and holds up better. Our plasma TV was 60" and we paid a pretty penny for it. It only lasted 23 months! We were told that we could buy a new one for the price of getting it fixed.
I say buy the LCD. That's what we plan on doing.
Good luck,

I had a Philips 42inch plasma and it only lasted 13 months, I was told they over heat and then break down and cost too much to fix and to avoid them and go for LCD instead, the picture quality also seems far better.

Best rule of thumb advise I was ever given:
Anything up to 37" screen LCD rules.
Anything over 37" screen Plasma comes into its own.
