Following his own will? Following what someone else tells him? Since God isn't real, where are they getting their ideas on what they think God's will is?

Sister Zeal, I'd love to see you elaborate on your answer. What research would lead them to answer differently, if they still did not believe in God?

Basically it's a way of not taking ownership & responsibility for one's actions (or inactions).
This is true anytime someone blames their actions or statements on someone other than themselves, so it's by no means exclusive to Christians.

You asked this question to Atheists. How would an atheist be able to answer what a Christian is doing or why ?
EDIT
Okay Linz VT & AM, yes you can observe. Thank you for answering. Here is my opinion from a Christian perspective. Most people that claim to be Christian sit in a church and never know what Gods will is nor will anyone in the church help them find it for the church leaders dont know. They pray asking God to show them but it never happens because they have never truly submitted to God. So they go through life throwing around the term 'Gods will' because everybody else does and they assume they must be doing His will because they are Christians and go to church. Now a true Christian will truly know what Gods will is because God Himself will speak to them and tell them exactly what He wants done. It will never be anything they want to do. God will always ask us to do things that make us cringe and have extreme sacrifice invloved. That is why anyone that thinks they are doing Gods will sitting in church or standing in the pulpit, obviously doesn't know God. In the Bible (though you probably don't believe it) look through the New Testament. Every single one of Christs apostle were put to death except John. Prior to that they walked away from all that they had, then they were beaten, spit on, and imprisoned. By the time they were executed death was a relief. Todays church goers think they are persecuted because of somebody laughing at them or not having many friends. If a true Christian follows Gods will then they also will know the sufferings that come with following Him. Doing Gods will is one of the most difficult things a person can humanly do and very few will ever experience it or understand it. Though I am not an Atheist I hope this helps in your questioning.

They're taking what is preached by their preacher, from the Bible, and other Christian sources to have an idea of what God's will is. These people, like many others have said, do not want to take responsibility for their own mistakes that they make. This person probably believes everything that happens is all part of the plan that was made for his life - and that everything will work out in the end.

Following an arbitrary set of rules laid down by the Catholic Church and later the several Protestant Churches over several thousand/hundred years, which were claimed to have been related directly from God.

You should have read some of the answers I got when I asked about the bible being interpreted. Appartently, there are only a few that can tell you what god's will is, and that is open to interpretation.
My conclusion: God's will is for you to be a servant.

He is following what he believes to be God's will.
I have a stepbrother who is a minister, and he truly believes that God speaks through him, that to spread the word is God's plan for his life. He seems to think that his inspiration comes directly from God, so I would imagine that is where he gets these ideas. He believes that God speaks to him not on an auditory level, but a spiritual one.

subtle things guide you. decisions you make in view of god's desire guide you. Chance things that happen after prayer or when you come to terms with what you need vs. what you want. It is all very subtle. There is no road sign. Atheists need loud signs...you are just not going to get that in Christianity. That's the joy of religion. Otherwise, you are just following signs blindly with no experience of self. Not an atheist. sorry.

Yes, following his own will. Or following the will of people from 2000 years ago who wrote some stupid book that says its ok to sell your daughters into slavery, and that its wrong to wear clothing made of mixed fibers.
