Who r called Hindus --- hindus themselves, sikhs, jains, vaishnavs ,buddhists...... All of these people r part of Sanatana Dharma.
Now talking about the role of Sikhs....yes the Sikh gurus main role was to protect Indians from the invading moghuls. Their main objective was to defeat muslims. And this continues till this day .....India has brave sikh soldiers who send shivers done the spine of muslim pakis.
But i donot completely agree to ur statement. The Rajput kings of India such as Maharana Pratap ,Prithviraj Chauhan, Rana sangha, Shivaji....n many others plyed imp. roles in defeating muslims.
akbar could never defeat Maharana Pratap --- Prithviraj Chauhan defeated ghajani 18 times. Shivaji could hundreds of trouble for aurangjeb.
It would be wrong to miss out these imp. Sons of India.
Now V.H.P , B.J.P, Bajrang dal, Shiv Saina r continuing the work.

You raise an interesting point, my brother. I'm sure that the Sikhs of the region helped preserve Hinduism by in a way making a compromise and merging the two religions together, you severely underestimate the agility of the Hindu religion to endure. You see, in Hinduism, no idea, no religious belief, is wrong. Every thing is a small part of an infinite whole. Hinduism survived Islam, Buddhism, Jainism and Christianity by absorbing those religious ideas into their own. They're kind of like the Borg from Star Trek.

I disagree. Only someone with a superficial understanding of these religions would think they could be combined effectively. Dharmic religions are as varied and different as early Greek philosophy. Just as you could not combine Democritus with Empedocles, you also could not combine Buddhism with Sikhism. The Buddha and Mahavira never refuted Hinduism because Hinduism as we understand it today, did not exist. There were the four Vedas and only three complete Upanishads by the time Mahavira and Siddhartha came about. Modern Hinduism is based on synchretism between schools that developed out of the heterodox philosophies (of which Buddhism and Jainism are a part) and the orthodox philosophies of Vedic Brahmanism. As Buddhism declined in India, it was incorporated into popular Hindu myth by making the Buddha one of the avatars of Vishnu, and doctoring legends to make everything fit. That's why if you read about Buddhism from a Hindu author, you will think Buddhism was just an outgrowth of Hinduism. However, all of this was done much later, and if you study current, peer-reviewed studies of Indian philosophy, you will see that the Hindu perspective is quite skewed. In reality, the diversity of philosophies in ancient India rival the Greeks. This is something to be respectful of, rather than trying to wash them all the same color.

I did know that Sikh are aliens, are you sure they are not of human race? are you sure that Guru Nanak was not educated in Hindu Faith? Do you know that there is more than 1000 times Govind, Ram, other Hindu names mentioned in Guru Granth Sahib? Do you know that there would be no Sikh faith without Hindu religion. It is like saying that roof protects the foundation. Oh by the way in Punjabi families it was practice to give first son to Sikhism.
Mugals only controlled a portion of northern India. The British controlled a larger India including Panjab. Just because you shout out loud, that does not become the truth. The Sikh, contribution is well documented, but so is the contribution of Martha, The Tamils, The Bengal, and others of India. Our National Anthem clearly describes them. No one alone can claim as the savior of Hinduism.
Without the philosophy of Southern States, Raj Ram Mohan Rai, Mahatma Gandhi, Tagore or various leaders we would have anything to defend.

At least in North India this is true. Had it not been Guru Teg Bahadur, guru Gobind singh and Banda Bairagi, that Mogul kings would have converted whole north india.
and Yes i agree with ashok... hindus made an army to protect themselves... which were called Sikhs...sikhism is not a separate religion but a branch of hinduism. Aum is the god for both

That doesn't make sense. The Mughals never ventured very far into southern India, where Hindu culture remained strong. There were some very powerful kingdoms in southern India that the Mughals couldn't defeat. Even if they had tried, European incursion into the sub-continent would have stopped them.

Hinduism existed before sikhism came into being. But you can say Hinduism produced some brave people to protect it who now have turned sikhs. Who was Guru Nanak. Was not he a Hindu.

I do not believe in this due to following reasons:
1> Hinduism is as a matter of fact not a religion but is an expression of eternal human nature explored by great minds thousands of years ago after a deep thought coupled with direct experiences. As long as humanity is to exist, hinduism will contenue in one form or other.
2> All religions that are based on books are not easy to destroy. For example, judism....
3>many endavors in the past have attempted to destroy hinduism but failed by the grace of Sri Krishna and that will continue to be till the end of universe.
Jai Sri Krishna: who takes birth in all ages to proact the dhrma, in forms different suited for the time and sapce. He came in the form of Rama, Krishna, Momahamd, Jesus, Buddha, and in modern times in Sri Ramakrishna and sant Sri Aasaram Bapujee.
