A lot depends on where and what you intend to hunt.
For all around knock down power, the 30.06 with 180gr slug is about the best, mostly for heavier game, and can be loaded with a 220gr bullet for animals like moose, bear, elk and the like.
For long range flat shooting for animals like deer, antelope, ect. the 270 is excellent. This cartridge is usually used in open country, not so great in brush.
For most hunting in the lower 48, either one is good, but the 30.06 holds the edge for heavier animals.

This really boils down to a Ford VS Chevrolet issue. Some like the .270 and others like the .30-06. I like both but actually prefer the .30-06 a bit more. I have no real reason, I guess I just owned a .30-06 before I owned a .270. Both are great cartridges for almost any North American game. The .270 has a little flatter trajectory but the .30-06 has a slight advantage the number of different loadings available for it. So, I'd say as long as you buy a good rifle such as a Remington 700 or a Savage, either cartridge will do the job for you quite well.

Flip a coin.
The answers above are all valid. It's personal choice more than anything. The .27 may shoot a bit flatter over 300 yards that the 30/06, but it's only out west where you're likely to have to take such a shot. Even so, that's too far for off-hand shots. Remember, 300 yards is almost 1000'.

The 30/06 probably has a greater assortment of bullet weights available, but there's not much game in N.A that a .270 won't put down cleanly.

Neither caliber is better than the other it depends on the hunter. I have taken deer, elk, and Moose with an 06, my step dad has done the same with a 270. Ammo costs for the rifles are the same and ease of find guns and ammo are the same. The 06 just has a wider range of bullet weights.

The .30-06 is a much better round.

well to tell ya the truth. the .270 is just a necked down 30-06 shell case, so you will have faster bullets and almost the same knock down power, but there are alot more variations of the .30 caliber bullets. so it just depends on what the shooter wants, and if you reload your own ammo...

The 30-06 would have more versatility for larger game such as elk and moose.

Depends on what/where you are hunting. Both are very versatile and adequate for North American game up to (but not including) large bears. Don't forget, the it is the rifleman, not the rifle that matters.
