You need to brush/comb the dog's hair daily. Get the dog used to being brush/combed so that there aren't matts - just like in your own hair. Before bathing a coated dog, they must be brushed/combed out or the water will make the matts tighten up so that they never get out and they end up causing sores on the dog. So even if it is a pup with shorter coat, still brush/comb it out so that it is very used to it -- be gentle but get the entire coat combed out. I train my dogs to lay quietly on the table on a towel as I comb first one side (I take it by layers and comb upward from topline to tummy and then each leg, under chin, etc.) and then the other. They get used to it pretty fast if done properly. Once combed out you can bathe her/him in the sink with luke warm water and a good dog shampoo and a dog creame rinse. Then I have them sit on the towel as I blow dry them -- get the dog used to the sound of the blow dryer without blasting them with the air first -- they need to know it isn't something that will hurt them and the actually start liking it after a while -- all this stuff is attention that they get from you so it becomes a nice routine for them once you have shown them that this is what will occur. I brush the coat upward as I am blow drying and it makes for a nice coat. I wouldn't bathe once a week unless s/he got into something to make her nasty. If you brush daily it will usually keep the coat fairly clean and bathing can be done occassionally. If you want you can bathe weekly but be sure and use a good creme rinse. The breeder should be able to help you with this. Also, if s/he has been recently altered or when s/he is altered, be sure and don't bathe him/her until the stitches are out and the site healed. The vet will let you know but just incase. Congratulations on the new dog.

since your dog is Shih-Tzu
you should GROOM it everyday
(With the hairclip and stuff)
and wash it EVERY WEEK.
cause shih-tzu's fur is long
taking care of a shih-tzu is hard cause you have to groom it EVERYday cause if you don't the "bangs" would do a damage to the eye.

Wash it once a month and if it is new, wash the dog 1-2 weeks after you get it.

Sorry i jusr researched it lol.
Id say once a month.
Its skin can dry out and then he would want to have bathes.
Also make sure you have animal shampoo, it can get rashes from regular shampoo.
Also Since your dog is maltese you'll need to brush it every day. Make sure the comb/brush doesnt hurt it.
Good Luck with your Maltese!

if nothing is wrong or has happened like being fixed. you can wash as soon as you want. then it depends on how fast s/he get dirty. but i wouldn't do it more than once a week so you don't dry out his/her skin.

i would say every day, because, if it lives indoors, then every day would b necessary, because it walks around and picks up germs, which end up in ur house
