Second opinions are almost always good, but aren't they often determined by the laziness of some doctors who do not go too far doing their job?

Patients should get a second opinion. I know of patients who would of had surgery that wasn't needed because of just having one doctor opinion. Doctors are learning also. There are doctors that know the lastest advances and there are doctors that just barely made it into their profession.

When the doctor is the one who suggests a second opinion, then I wonder if he is unsure of his decision, is doing what is best for me, or just trying to prevent a law suit against him because of doing an unnecessary surgery.

One thing that I like about teaching hospitals, is that the doctors there are teams of doctors. If a doctor can teach what he knows to others...then he must really be up to date and know his material...otherwise he would be questioned like crazy, from his good students, about why he was using an old remedy when there are new ones out there and why he was using old methods when there are better procedures available.
