use neooffice. its openoffice ported to mac. it is exactly the same. with the openoffice mac edition you need to install x11 which can get confusing, so just use neooffice.

Select Open Office Calc as the program to open it with. I am a Linux user, not Mac, but you probably right click and select from a list of programs. One of your options may just say "Office" but you need to drill down in the menu to Calc. If it asks if you always want to use Calc, say yes.

Like the first guy said, use NeoOffice. It's OpenOffice.org designed specially for Mac OS X.
