Your idea sounds perfect. Can you have his name or initials put on the cover??? You know, personalize it.
Whatever you give him, let it be 'your' choice'. Most people know enough about a friend to know some of their likes and dislikes. What has he spoken of wanting to purchase?? What has he admired???? What does he need???
His religion is secondary, as long as the gift isn't contrary to his beliefs.

Well as u say that he converted to islam, u might wanna get him one of them electronic qurans, it is like the i-Pod touch, it recites the quran and as it is reciting , it also highlights the verses it is reading. It is really cool. It might help him stay sober as he is in the Entertainment Industry. Salaam!!!

Wow- the hate is flowing freely in some of these answers.
You really don't need an answer because you have picked out the perfect gift.
I am an avid reader who loves my ipod and I would be very pleased with that gift.
