It would be me, a single female in her mid 20's, who would like to relax without huge crouds. I especially am interested in swimming in an ocean without crazy waves and have some interesting things to do on the island. Somewhere I'd feel comfortable and weclomed by the Hawaiians.

this is going to be for a travel writing project, so I would like a somewhat secluded spot with a lot of natural inspiration surrounding me as well as having calm water to swim in.

Aloha. Hawai'i is a wonderful place, I hope you enjoy it. Could I suggest O'ahu, the capital Island. On the eastern side there is a long fringing reef that makes for very calm waters along the beaches protected by it. Lanikai and Waimanalo are very beautiful, but there are others as well. Don't leave anything valuable in your car. A very interesting site in Honolulu is the Bishop Museum, it covers the history of the Islands quite extensively, it is one of the finest museums in the world and probably the very best for Pacific history.
Also on O'ahu there are generally calm beaches in the Waikiki area, Queens in particular. All of the Islands are beautiful but only O'ahu has beaches that can be calm on a regular basis.
You might also consider the Big Island because of many interesting hikes around the Volcano area, it is fascinating, it is incredible. Some fairly calm beaches can be found in Kona, and also some are sheltered by offshore rock formations out Keaukaha way east of Hilo.
If you were to chose Maui the beaches on the west side are sheltered by Lana'i, Kahoolawe, and Moloka'i and are fairly calm, this would be the Kihei area. The eastern side of Maui is extraordinarily beautiful, many people consider it the prettiest area in all of Hawai'i, but the beaches are not generally very calm, your best chance for calm water would be at Hamoa near Hana.
And if you should chose Kaua'i the Kalalau Trail, Kalalau Valley, Koke'e Park, Waimea Canyon are all very beautiful, calm water might be found at Ke'e Beach, but use good judgement.
For all beaches, it is a very good idea to survey the ocean for several minutes before going in. Waves come in sets separated by lulls. Know what the ocean is doing before you get in.
Sadly, your chances of being welcomed by Hawaiians are not too good. It might happen, I hope so, but as a rule Hawaiians have become hostile toward Haoles (white people) because of ....well lets just call it history. If I could suggest a book to read to get a little perspective, James Michener's "Hawaii" is superb, if a little long.
Enjoy!

On Oahu:
Hanauma Bay on the east part of the island, is calm & has good snorkeling, but will be crowded
Kailua, Lanikai, or Bellows beaches on the windward side are reasonably calm & much less crowded. Bellows is military, but is open to the public on the w/e
Magic Island, just west of Waikiki is calm & will be less crowded than Waikiki.
I think that the local people are not as hostile as one of the other answerers indicated.

On Oahu, Ala Moana beach is amazingly calm and not crowded at all. Oahu is also the island that is the most developed. It has the most to do in the way of shopping and somewhat tourist-y things, but also still has beautiful scenery. It just depends on what you're looking for.

A couple of my friends recently went to Maui and they said they loved it.
They also said the beaches were great, they got to go up to the volcanoes, and it never rains there.
Plus the weather stays around 82 degrees (I think that's what they said) all year.
