No, they should rot in jail. I prefer having the best trained military in the world continuing to do the awesome job they have performed. We don't need any hyped up crack heads serving in our fine military.

I am retired Air Force, but if I had been army the man, I would most like to take point is the best man in my outfit. He needs to be able to control his movements, pass information back to the rest of the squad, put his *** on the line every time he and the men are out in the field. He is well trained and practices almost everyday with any weapon. He is at his best as point when no one gets hurt on either side unless that is the mission. A gang banger is very good at killing people, but cannot follow orders and definitely not dependable. I would not want him around my excellent soldiers who have worked hard to get where they are in the military. I do not want Judges to give the choice of jail time or military time for a guilty person convicted of a crime. I would be very worried about who would be watching my back.

Excellent idea but there is a problem you are missing. Gang bangers are tough and bad when they have no challenges. They are at their baddest when facing an unarmed victim.
Not one of them would or could stand up in a knife fight with a Delta or SEAL or Ranger. Pick the SEAL with the lowest PFT and he'd kill a gang banger with a knife in about 3 seconds. So the gang banger would get a gun and the SEAL (Ranger, Delta, Marine ReCon, take your pick) would drop him with a triple tap before his shaking hand could lift a weapon.
When we change our form of government (and it's coming) the new government will use CN gas to solve the "Gang banger question" and a few other problems.

Not hypocritical at all. Actually it is a ridiculous comparison. You brought it up not I. If I'm speaking about the war in Iraq why would I bring something up that has nothing to do with it? Of course gang-violence is a problem, but that doesn't undermine the war as a problem either.

No this would NOT WORK
because of the following:
They would be too stoned to know what to do
Their music would alert the enemy of their approach
They don't know how to read road maps
They would be too busy trying to sell drugs to the others
They would never leave the street corner
They would spend more time cleaning their crack pipes then their weapons.
Their mommas won't let them leave the neighborhood
and they sure as he@# won't cover each others back in a real fight!!

How much time and money do you propose to waste training them?
And how do you propose forcing them to serve in the military?
How many military man-hours would be wasted guarding them to make sure they wont go absent or go over to the enemy??
And how do you propose controlling them?
And how do you propose to enforce such a dumb idea seeing as there is no law or draft which can force criminals to be used in the military??

Consider that they would commit all manner of atrocities when they are not in battle and normal punishment won't work. The death penalty would have to be utilized for all manner of infractions such as looting, rape, assault, and insubordination.
