5 years old boys love toy trucks/cars...particularly ones that make sounds---firetrucks, police cars, ambulance. If they have flashing lights even better. I have a nephew the same age--his best gifts are the cars and trucks and he loves them.

There's a video learning game, I forgot what it's called, but they ride a bicycle for exercise and to make the game work and it helps them learn ABC's and stuff like that. Our almost-5 year old wants one for his birthday next month. I think it's fisher price?

My daughter will be 5 next year and I know what the kids in her class like:

Spiderman
Trucks
SpongeBob Square Pants

I would look into depending on your budget. putting together a bunch of different things together.... books, small figures, blocks, trucks.....etc.... that way even if he doesn't like spiderman, he will probably like the toys.
