Start now. Look at all the popular web sites - Travelocity, Expedia, CheapTickets, FareWatcher, Kayak, Priceline, etc. There are usually sales following Christmas and the first of the new year. Check regularly cause fares change often. Check early morning for best results. Many airlines post cheaper fares shortly after midnight. Sign up for any fare watcher emails that some web sites offer. When you see a fare that you like, book it cause it could change quickly. If you wait to see if it drops further, you may not get that good price again.

Right now would be a great time to do so.
I purchased my son's ticket in April for his trip to Rome in September........by doing it early, I saved over $700.

I went directly thru the airline, I chose Continental Airlines....spoke to one of the reservationists and told him my son would be traveling abroad to study for a semester and asked what discounts they offered and I got a great deal.
By the way, it was a non-stop flight and it took 7 hours.

sooner the better. I have found great deals at SpinCityTravel.com. They have hundreds of options plus package deals when you book everything together. They also have consolidated fares through farebuzz where you can travel out and back on different airlines and save even more money.
