My cat Oobie always gives me the head ******, ear's perked, huh? look whenever I call him, he comes when he feels like it (pure kitty attitude) so yes cat's are like dog's in that fashion if you call them by the same name all the time and start when they are small or as soon as you get them and make sure you are looking at them and let them know you mean them when you say that name they will come to realize that when you say that word you are talking to them-Good luck, a little patience is all you need-remember cat's are much more independent than dog's so it will take a little longer-you can also try giving a treat if they come to you when you call their name, that helps sometimes too.

Some do, some don't. Maybe yours doesn't like what you call it. My current one answers to at least 6 names. Keep in mind they'll never respond like dogs - dogs are wired to behave in a hierarchical power structure - someone is always in charge, and the rest follow orders. Cats don't do that scene at all. You can bargain with them, beg, bribe and cajole; but you can't ever hope to control them like a dog. The best you can do is provide good incentives for responding to the name, like treats, toys, tickling, kisses, and basic adoration.

I don't know how old your cat is, but every cat that I have ever had knows their name. I live out in the country. I have around 20 cats. some are indoor/outdoor and some are totally outdoor, but I guarantee you they all know their names. I can't imagine why a cat wouldn't know their name.
I even have cats named Sophie and Sephie and they both know their names. If your cat doesn't know it's name, you haven't been calling it by it's name long enough.

Cats have a different "view of life" than dogs. Each cat has its own unique personality. Unlike dogs, cats are more independent, dogs want to please people but cats are more aloof and wait for people to please them.
When I come home my dog always wags her tail and loves to be petted and have lots of attention. BUT all 3 of my cats just look up as if to say, "Oh it's only you".
My cats do respond to their names, however, it is only when they choose to!

My cats definitely have selective hearing. They hear the food hitting the bowl and they hear their name when they think they'll be getting food or think I want to play. Other than that they don't really respond.

Some do and some don't. It depends on
1: how long you've had your cat
2:How smart your cat is
They will hear you, but often do not respond more than glancing at you.
