No i didnt, that seems a bit ironic doesn't it. How could a man like that have had such soul ?
I wonder how he equated his feelings about what he did, or maybe he just didn't see it as wrong.
I will see this song very differently now.

Indeed he was a slave trader, when he came to know the saving grace of the Lord Jesus, he 'quit.
he also became a minister and a hymnwriter
wikipedia has gathered good information about John Newton
John Newton (July 24, 1725 – December 21, 1807) was an Anglican clergyman and former slave-ship captain. He was the author of many hymns, including Amazing Grace.

A former slave trader. Actually about 40 years after he retired from seafareing. Also, the song wasnt nessessarily related to his experiences at sea, or in the slave trade.
There was movie that came out this past year about John Newtons life. I havent seen it, but it looks good.

It's very possible to learn to sing well. You just need to know the right methods. Learn here https://tr.im/tHSnd
Singing teachers will cost money and can be expensive so they're not for everyone. Singing can be learned so it's not an "either you have it or you don't" kind of thing.
Whether you sound like crap or you're decent, I recommend this singing course. It's one of the best methods to learn to sing well in a short amount of time. It's all about using efficient techniques that work.

Sure. And thanks for sharing that, for it shows how far God's Grace reaches down to lowly man. It does not matter where you've been or what you have done because when Jesus stretched His arms out and died...He did it for every single person. If you accept Jesus into your heart, as John Newton, God will give you a new song that this world can never squelch.

Was he a slave trader when he penned Amazing Grace, or was the song written after his redemption? In any instance, his sins are between him and God, not men.

John Newton wrote this hymn some time after converting to Christianity.
Later in life, he deeply regretted his personal involvement in the slave trade. He joined William Wilberforce in the campaign for abolition of slavery.

Yes! many of us know this and it goes to demonstrate the power of God's grace toward us through Jesus Christ. The Lord boasts that His arm is not shortened that it cannot save!

Yes, and after years of transporting slaves on ships, God got a hold of his heart, he repented and became a Christian. Later on he became a pastor who helped the members of English parliament be the first to abolish slave trading.
