I can tell you right now, from experience, that Vista will drive you up the wall with 512mb RAM. It uses almost the entire memory. I had to buy an additional memory chip - now it works fine.
I would not use Windows 2000 unless you have absolutely no need for more upgraded software. Win2000 is too old.
Here are some links to help you get used to Vista:

Vista is just not a very good operating system. It is resource hungry and having only 512 MB of RAM will have your computer RAM challenged. I would recommend at least 1 gig of RAM for Vista - preferably -2. Besides that - the home version is pretty much striped down.
Before going to Windows 2000 - check and make sure that all the drivers you will need are available for download - probably at the computer manufacturer's web site.

I have windows vista on the computer in the basement. Right now on this computer Im using windows 2000.
Well, it really depends if you can get used to the new features on windows vista.
When you want to install something (for example like a software from a Cd) it will most likely not work because it may not be compatible with windows vista.
Overall, I enjoy using windows vista, but it fustrates me when Cd softwares are not made compatible with Windows Vista.

It depends on your uses. If you are more of a business type user then you should load Windows 2000 however if you are a more media-oriented user then you should keep Windows Vista Home. The features are specifically curtailed to type of user for these operating systems.

If your looking for style, and good programs/features then I would keep Vista.
If you want Windows I won't argue but try loading XP or Pro. 2000 is pretty old.

I would recommend going with xp because your computer barely meets the requirements for vista and because windows 2000 is ancient.
