my son will be two years old next month and he has become quite the escape artist! Lately, he has been climbing out of his crib, often in the early morning (3am) and wandering around the house. short of locking him in his room, how can i keep him in the bed???

Get him a toddler bed so that he won't get hurt if he gets out of it. Also, make sure his room i gated so that if he opens the door he can't get out of his room and wander around the house. This way you can still hear him (the door is open) but he isn't able to wander around and get into things he shouldn't.

Well, normally I would say get a crib tent to keep him from getting out. Do a web search on "crib tents" and you will see what I am talking about. But since he's nearly two, you may want to consider transitioning to a toddler bed or real bed now. If you are going to do that I'd start with the mattress on the floor first, so if he falls off while sleeping it won't be far.

But...he is two and won't stay in the bed anyway. They just do that at this age, and it takes a while to grow out of it. Really the only way to keep him from wandering the house is to use a baby gate (which he will probably climb over if he can make it out of a crib already) or a doorknob cover or lock on his door. Lots of people who answer these questions here will tell you not to lock your child in, but they've obviously never had a 2YO turn on the stove, drop glass jars out of the fridge, take knives out of the dishwasher, climb up on cabinets/tables/furniture, or try to get out of the house while they were sleeping. IMHO, it's okay to "lock" the door during this time if they are especially active, up until they are potty-trained, as long as you can hear them if they need you (I used a monitor, and both my kids either knocked or kicked on the door at that age anyway).

Get him a bed...in case he falls. Then every time he gets out, put him straight back in and dont engage in conversation...my little girl went through this at 2 and I would be standing by her bed for up to an hour...just putting her back in...she'd get out and I'd put her back...she used to give up eventually and the whole thing only lasted a week...she figured out that I wouldnt give in.

it's time for a bed... we just went through this here 2 weeks ago. we actually bought a day bed for him b/c we thought that the toddler bed was too small. he sleeps all over the place.
we pull out the bed underneath just in case....
also PUT UP GATES :) we do that... if not he'd be all over the place.

ignore the second poster that is dangerous and illegal

second put a gate on his door

double the gates if need be and get off your butt since you know when hes up and put him back to bed with a swatted leg or backside
