I think 'Concerned' has the best answer. The intent of political correctness is good but the effects are devastating to a free society. Free speech is a right we all have but it comes with responsibility. That means that we have a moral responsibility to be honest but to speak in a way that would uplift our neighbor rather than tear them down. God commands us to love our neighbor with all our hearts. Well, using language that is so judgmental will not create peace and tolerance of our differences. Neither will censorship, which is all political correctness is today's society.

Racism isn't something new to this country. It's been around for a long time. Slavery - God's chosen people were slaves to the Egyptians so why can't we just get past this issue in our country? The jewish people have. It's too easy to continue looking for someone to blame rather than forgiving and moving forward together as a nation but we'll never see the full blessings that we could have as long as we're stuck in the past.

How we deal with it is measurement of our times. Loving God, a better educated citizenry and elected officials that are 'of the people' will improve our great nation to help heal the wounds of our past and present. Free speech is just as important today as it was when our founding fathers authored the longest living constitution known to man.

You don't get arrested for improper comments. People in the media may get fired because it costs the networks some sponsors and hurts them financially. It leaves them open to law suits from private citizens.

Political correctness is a bad term for using responsible speech and taking care not to offend people. It makes it sound like our government is being oppressive, when in actuality, it has more to do with litigation in the private sector and financial priorities which is what makes the world go around in this country.

Racism is more than just comments. It effects many legal and financial issues for minorities that can be done very quietly and without notice from the public, unfortunately.

I think political correctness is a needed movement to provide the equal opportunity for all Americans regardless of the individual's color, race, origin, and religion belief. Political correntness is a good intent or policy (you may say) to make Americans to be united in diversity. This means American government policy makers should legislate laws of equality for white, black, Haspanic, Asian, and other enthic groups to have the rights to share and access all kinds of American facilities in Education, sporting, financial, and including all public transportation and washroom. Every American should conform with this law initiated by political correctness. I was sick to see an American movie that a black lady boldly sip a mouthful of water from a drinking fountain labelled as "For White Only" in front of a park in US. Eliminate racism will make this world to become a society of harmony and stop the wars, too.

That's just BS. What matters more is what a person actually believes inside. Political correctness demands that people lie and go around saying what they don't really feel. If I was a minority I would feel much better knowing how someone really thinks rather than be 'protected' by political correctness.

People should be able to be honest and say what they mean.

Political Correctness is all about stifling speech...

And the best barrier against racism is mutual tolerance, empathy, and education.

Three things the world at large seems to be in a dire need of.

Political Correctness, as currently practiced in the USA and in most institutions, is an effective way to cause evil people to keep their stupid mouths shut and plot their evil ways in secret.

If it were not for political correctness, the crime rate in the country, the volume of hate crimes, and crimes against children, would be much lower, perpetrators caught much faster, because they would not have kept their opinions to themselves.

But this is not why PC is often attacked by most people.

PC has been taken to ridiculous extremes by beaurocrats. This leads not so much to people attacking PC, as to making fun of the entire concept.

How is it "a barrier against racists"? If I say something negative about another race I am labeled a racist because of my race. But if a racist member of another (special, wink, wink) race, makes negative statements about my race, he is labeled a comedian (or a leader of that race). Political correctness is just a means to punish certain people for their thoughts.

A barrier against racist?
When the double standard is gone, then I'll give a hoot. In the mean time if you are white you cannot say anything without it being racist or considered profiling.
If you are black you can say the "N" word, and call white folks names
If you are "Hispanic" we are green go's and you can use whatever words you want but not the whites.

Political correctness was made up by someone in denial.

If you continually force a foreign ideology down a indigenous populations throat and tell them unless you except our views we will punish you with prison or worse . the anger that is generated will be directed on the very ones you are trying to protect . especially if you try to alter or change the indigenous populations cherished ways and favour the foreigners ones .I can thing of no stupider way of trying to merge two cultures together . when an emigrant comes to these shores they should exept our ways or not come at all , and in the case of a medieval culture that wants to imbue there stone age religion on us , when our ancesters fought and died to advance this far the mind boggles
