why is it that i am having an occasional literaly terrifying dream?, so much so that i wake up abruptly and i can't shake the fear for hours, i am jumpy and scared and feel like i am still in the dream, even when i am dreaming i know that i am dreaming and yell and scream for my fiance to come to me and wake me up, but i really don't make a peep. it scares me and makes me not want to go to bed at night.
are dreams an interpatation of your subconcious? cause if it is that scares me even more, if its no,t why the night terrors?

This kind of dream is often an indication of a physical problem, possibly sleep apnea, although that is not the only cause. You should see a sleep specialist and have a sleep study done to make sure it isn't something that needs to be treated. Otherwise, it would be an indication of some severe stress you are under that needs to be addressed.

I know exactly what you are talking about. There was a period in my life that lasted for about two years when I had night terrors just like yours, on and off, for no particular reason that I knew of and it terrified me. I also wondered if my subconscious knew something that my conscious mind didn't know and if it was trynig to warn me about something. I know better now and hopefully I can bring some relief to your mind.
First, some facts about night terrors. Sleep labs across the United States and Canada have shown through sleep studies, that night terrors happen due to increased brain activity and appear in stage 4 of sleep (the stage just before REM, known as NREM, non-rem), when you are in the deepest sleep stage and it is very difficult to awaken. The cause of night terrors is still unknown, although some things that can help bring out a night terror are stress, certain medications that affect the brain, being over-tired or eating a heavy meal - they may also be caused by unresolved psychological conflicts, or traumatic events. Night terrors can also run in families, but most people are unaware of the fact.
In my particular case, I now know that my night terrors were brought on by either stress or being over-tired; or a combination of both. Also, I believe I was susceptible because I later found out that night terrors did run in my family - and anxiety was also a factor.
The reason I couldn't or didn't identify "stress" as a trigger at the time was because I didn't realize that I was stressed. We all think of stress as negative and easy to identify, but that is not always the case. During this period of my life I was extremely happy and very busy. I loved my job, I was in a very happy, serious relationship and I had wonderful friendships - but, in the middle of some of the best years of my life, I was having night terrors!
In reality, I was stressed - because I was doing too much, spreading myself too thin and my system was running on "overload". I loved my job, but it was a very stressful job, which at the time I just considered challenging and took in my stride. Actually, it was my job that I loved so much that was one of the biggest sources of my stress; it was slowly draining me and I didn't realize that until I almost burned out. I was going to bed at night, my mind still too active from a busy day, and sometimes over-tired. I should mention that I noticed even then that it was usually when I was over-tired that I had night terrors. I had always thought it was a good kind of tired, from a happy, busy day.
It was when my life calmed down that the night terrors stopped and I realized that the cause of these night terrors, at least in my case, was mostly stress (and all the complications it can cause) from an overactive life; a happy life, yes, but stressful nevertheless. So slow down and smell the roses, as the saying goes - learn to identify the stressors in your life and be aware of the consequences of a stressful lifestyle. A little serenity in your life will go a long way and remember, happiness and stress are not mutually exclusive.
I hope I was able to help a little bit.

I believe most nightmares occur when there in uncertainty in your life. When you feel you are out of control. Its at these times when you feel most vulnerable. When we are awake, we can control these fears and change our thought process. However when we go to sleep, our subconscious mind addresses these and our fears become elevated and because we are asleep..we can't consciously change the thought process.
I think you need to determine what is causing you anxiety and try to address it.
When I lost my job..I started having terrifying dreams about being in a plane crash...this was because i felt I had no control in my life..a lot of uncertainty. That is also how I feel when I fly...thus the nightmare.
