There is quite a lot of evidence that exercise is good for depression. It releases endorphins, can get rid of tension and (yes it's true) give you more energy, something that a lot of people with depression can feel they are lacking. I am very lethargic when I am depressed.
You might also find that the routine of exercising on set days helps you to feel a little better, and while it is difficult to get into an exercise routine it gets easier every time, so make a date, think about what exercise you will do and where, and go for it.

Helping others is also a good way to feel better. This doesn't have to be anything big, although it could be volunteering of some kind. Just asking people about their day/life and letting them talk to you about their problems makes us feel better. And depression can make you very inward looking, so it's worth making an effort to do this anyway. I've read before that you can think of depression as a disease of the ego, but that isn't necessarily true for everyone.

A lot of the ideas suggested are good ones - the key to remember is that each individual will react in different ways. Medication, counselling and making an effort with my friends worked for me when I was ill. Regular exercising makes me feel alive now.

Suicide isn't a solution, it's a finality. There's lots of things to try, and just remember not to be too hard on yourself - overcoming depression can take time, but it can be done.

Good luck.

Yoga really helps for depression. Sometimes, when I'm depressed, I think about all of the people who aren't as lucky as I am, that makes me feel very appreciative and gets my mind of depression. I also just take a nap, that relaxes your body and can really take your mind off of things. And if you really want to do something like suicide, then you should find a counselor. Or, you can think about the good times you've had in life. You can start doing stuff you've always wanted to do, that way, you'll always have a good memory. Plan the future ahead of you. So you'll always have something to look forward to.

Why are you depressed? There are so many young people depressed these days, it is so sad. Why is that? There has to be a reason why so many young people feel hopeless in a world where there are so many opportunities.
I too was depressed for many years, and I still take Cymbalta for depression/pain. But taking meds does not take away the reason for depression, so I have had to go to counseling and start diggin up things that have happened to me in my life that have made me feel bad about myself. I have started that--and truely I am getting better. It is not pleasant to go th rough past hurts and pains, but it is a healing process and does make my future look much brighter.

Check out depression treatments, at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris in section 2, and consult a doctor, to eliminate thyroid problems, etc. as possible contributing factors: also seek a referral to a therapist using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy. It is your decision, and yours alone, as to whether to take any antidepressants offered, but, before you do, read section 1, and check medications out at www.drugs.com so you will be on the lookout for side effects, like sexual dysfunction. My strong recommendation, however, is to follow the advice of my doctor, his partner, and also Marcelle Pick, OB/GYN NP, and Dr. Mercola, as well, at http://www.mercola.com and avoid antidepressants (page 2V refers, & antidepressant websites: page 2). All of their advice, (except prayer, because many people are not religious) I have incorporated into the "core treatments", including others as options, such as herbal remedies. If you are diagnosed with clinical (major) depression, antidepressants may be necessary for a while, which will give the treatments time to become effective. The antidepressants themselves need at least several days, or even many weeks to become effective. It's a good idea to taper off them slowly, with medical advice, after several months, say, to a couple of years, at most, because they are only effective in the long term for about 30% of people. Because of this, you would be well advised to begin the treatments immediately, and maintain them. I'd just thank your mental health care provider, and pocket the prescription, trying the treatments for a few months, to see if they are sufficient for you, before considering filling it (unless clinically depressed, and having great difficulty functioning, in which case I'd take them). Anger management is addressed on page 4, and self harm, in section 16.

You need to talk to someone. If you see a doctor they will be able to discuss your situation and possibly prescribe you anti-depressants and/or refer you for counselling.
There might also be organisations in your areas that provide counselling.
Try and distract yourself when you get urges to cut yourself. Anything to keep yourself busy, watch a film, go for a walk, ring a friend etc. Also the Samaritans are good, or other phone lines.

Seek counseling and possibly medication. I know that some people will say medication isn't the key but it has helped me a lot....but in conjunction with therapy, not just medication. Good luck and talk to a doctor soon.

If you have cut yourself and the injury is spurting then please call the emergency services

Try asking yourself these questions:
Why do you Self Harm?
When do you Self Harm?
Is there any place you dont or cant self harm? You might want to go there if this is possible.

Try and name 5 things you can see, 4 things you can hear, 3 things you can smell, 2 things you can touch and 1 thing you like about yourself.

Put red playdough where you want to cut and use a *blunt* knife to cut through it.

Music

Keep a Diary (Journal)

Stay in a Public Place

Watch a Film (movie)

Relaxation/Deep Breathing

Read a Book

Exercise/Go for a Walk

Do Some Housework

For every hour that you don't harm yourself, treat yourself to something.

Relax in a warm bath

Curl up under a big warm duvet with a hot drink and a good book

Put on some calming, relaxing music and rub baby oil or moisturiser into the parts of you that you want to cut

Phone a mate and have a chat about whatever takes your fancy

Take yourself off to bed with a trayful of treats

Visit a good friend

Rip up an old piece of clothing

Try and tear up a thick cardboard box

Smash an empty soft drinks bottle against a wall

Crunch up soft drinks cans

Go to the gym and hit out at one of those punching bags

Use a pillow or cushion and bash it against a wall

Rip up as many pages of an old newspaper as you can in one go

Use playdough to take out all your feelings

Go for a walk and break up any sticks you find along the way

Do some housework

Do some exercise/go for a walk

Take some ice into your hands and squeeze it *hard*

Put a frozen pack of peas (or whatever) on the area you want to hurt

Bite into or chew something (food-wise) that tastes hot or nasty

Have a cold bath or shower

Find something in the room and examine it closely. Write a detailed description of it including as much information as you can and then try and list all it's possible uses. Try and get the list to 25 - if you can find that many uses try and find 40

Use food coloring on the places you want to see blood

Use a marker pen to draw where you want to see the burns

Spin yourself round on the spot until you get dizzy

Buy a coloring book and some coloring pencils and color in some of the pictures

Curl up in bed with a soft toy

Do some finger painting with food - ice cream, chocolate pudding, jam, custard... try all sorts of different things

Get creative - try writing poetry or a story or drawing or painting how you feel

Go for a walk and smile at everyone you see. If you are feeling braver, say hello to everyone too.

Pop bubblewrap

Start at one page on the internet and follow all the links from that page and see how far away from the original subject you can get - try following links so that you go from depression sites to sites about positive things

Plan your ideal holiday in your mind and then try and research it all online - destinations, prices, tickets, what there is to do when you get there... as much as you can find.

Look into learning yoga or meditation

Go through magazines and catalogues and cut out all the words and pictures that make you feel good

Hug a soft toy

Take your imagination on a journey to a favourite place

Make a list of all the things that are good about yourself

Make a list of affirmations for yourself and read them aloud to yourself

Buy yourself a special plant and take extra special care of it

Do something for someone - go shopping for them, take their dog for a walk etc

Plan your next holiday and do as much of it as you can online. You don't have to book anything but plan as much as you can right down to the smallest detail

Phone a friend and have a chat

Arrange to see or go out with a friend

Go to an online gaming site and try out all the games. When you've done them all go back to the first one and try and improve on the first attempt

Create a neopet

Well first stop wearing black , and listening to depressing music.
Anything under the alternative rock category is out. Then you will need to stop being so juvenile. Throw away your skate board and take up an actual productive activity , like a job. If this doesn't work grow up and deal with your emotions like a grown-up.
