I am travelling to Australia shortly and intend to hire a car. I currently have an old paper uk driving licence and need to know if I have to get picture licence and or international licence.

you should have a picture driving license. if you had to produce your documents in the uk, they wont accept a paper license any more. youll be better off getting a new one, as it might be needed to show your identity when you go to australia. you should be ok with that, you dont need an international license, they are for people moving to another country not people who are going on holiday.

If you have a valid UK driving licence, that is all you need to hire a car in Australia. If your UK licence is so old that it might cause you problems hiring a car in the UK, then it might be worthwhile getting an International Driving Licence which is obtainable from any Motor Registry or whatever you call them in the UK.
