There are several ways you can do this. The obvious one is by reading. Choose good works rather than trashy ones, some of the classics like those by the Brontes. Also a wide variety of books covering many topics. Attempt crosswords too and keep a good dictionary and thesaurus with you. It's not a bad idea to open dictionaries at any page at random and try to find a new word. Use the thesaurus to substitute regular words like 'nice', which doesn't really mean anything, with alternatives such as : pleasant, agreeable, delightful,. respectful. See how easy it is. Use words appropriately and in their correct context. For example the word 'ignorant' is often used to describe someone whose behaviour is offensive when it actually means 'lack of knowledge.

Keep at it and you'll soon increase your vocabulary.

What i do is I ask my English instructor to grant me a packet of a few random vocabulary words to check. I learn them as though i've got been going to take a try on them. i've got been utilising words on those lists ever sense. Or i even make it a factor to examine like previous-ish books that have extreme vocabularies, and that i learn those besides.

Read, read read. Then, when you're done with that, read some more. Reading is, hands down, the most effective vocabulary-builder I know of. Writing is also helpful.
