What is Flexeril?

Flexeril is a muscle relaxant. It works by blocking nerve impulses (or pain sensations) that are sent to your brain.

Flexeril is used to treat pain, tenderness, and limited motion caused by muscle spasms. This medication is used together with rest and physical therapy for short-term treatment (2 to 3 weeks).

Flexeril may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

What is the most important information I should know about Flexeril?

Do not take Flexeril if you have used an MAO inhibitor such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), tranylcypromine (Parnate), phenelzine (Nardil), or selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam) within the past 14 days. Serious, life-threatening side effects can occur if you take Flexeril before the MAO inhibitor has cleared from your body.
You should not take this medication if you have recently had a heart attack, or if you have a heart rhythm disorder, congestive heart failure, heart block, or an overactive thyroid.

Do not stop taking Flexeril suddenly if you have been taking it for longer than 1 week. Stopping suddenly may cause nausea, headache and general discomfort.

Avoid drinking alcohol, which can increase some of the side effects of this medication. Flexeril can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be awake and alert.

Hi,

Flexeril is a muscle relaxant, used to treat the pain and stiffness of muscle injuries, including strains, sprains and muscle spasms.
Flexeril may enhance the effects of alcohol, barbiturates, and other CNS depressants so it's not recommended to drink or take with other drugs.
It has been found to be a very effective muscle relaxant.

Flexeril can be bought under the Flexeril brand name (butterscotch-yellow, D-shaped, film-coated tablets), there is also a generic form of the drug.

FLEXERIL (Cyclobenzaprine) is a muscle relaxant. It works by blocking nerve impulses (or pain sensations) that are sent to your brain.
Cyclobenzaprine is used together with rest and physical therapy to treat skeletal muscle conditions such as pain or injury.
Cyclobenzaprine may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.

FLEXERIL, especially when used with alcohol or other CNS depressants, may impair mental and/or physical abilities required for performance of hazardous tasks, such as operating machinery or driving a motor vehicle. In the elderly, the frequency and severity of adverse events associated with the use of cyclobenzaprine, with or without concomitant medications, is increased. In elderly patients, FLEXERIL should be initiated with a 5 mg dose and titrated slowly upward.
