To reply to one correspondent I have no intention to do so myself. Since this is partly a legal matter I should have said that I was asking about the situation in UK. I have in fact applied for a copy of a death certificate for a friend's relative who died many years ago and was rumoured to have died by her own hand.

I guess it would depend on state laws. Cause of death: Drug overdose (deliberate)? I don't know.

No they dont put the exact death on the certificate, and the death doesnt effect insurance as someone had mentioned. it's the clinical reason for death on the actual certificate.

Committing suicide is only revealed in the clinical reason for death.

No it doesn't say suicide. If they hung themselves it states Asphyxiation etc. There is ALWAYS an autopsy to establish the actual cause of death so someone who cut their wrists may have cause of death stated as heart failure. It is the coroners report that will state the fact that it was suicide.

since this is a police case, the death certificate may contain the details as well.

Oh it'll definitely say it on the death certificate. It's not hidden at all from the public.

YEs it is because insurance companys have to have a copy before they pay on life insurance claims. They WONT pay on a suicide.

The words self inflicted are used. On the Autopsy at least.
