Some patients who have back pain and have signs and symptoms of nerve impingement, initially they undergo conservative treatment including pain relievers, lifestyle modifications and physical therapy. But if there's persistence of intractable pain, greatly affects lifestyle of the patient and progressive bladder and bowel problems, surgical management is recommended.
We have had patients who has weakness of both lower extremities and has back pain who had "back surgery" and underwent physical therapy after. She eventually got rid of her walker with minimal to absent pain in the back.

I have never had back surgery but a family friend of mine had one done a number of years ago. One of the things she did to prepare for that surgery was to eat a lot of peanut butter (if not allergic to peanuts of course) in the weeks before that surgery. The reason is because of the iron in peanuts. It helped to minimize the amount of blood loss that can occur with having back surgery.

I have had 2 major back surgeries......i have scoliosis which is a curved spine so i had NO CHOICE. I was already leaning way to the left. 1st surgery they put screws and rods in it and i don't think i wore my brace like i was suppose to. DO EVERYTHING YOUR DR. TELLS U TO DO!!!!! So that ending up falling apart and i had to have my lumber fused. I am in pain every day but at least i can stand straight but i do have to go to pain management and take narcotics and wear and pain patch??? When it gets cold and rainy like it is NOW it is not good!!!!!!!!!!! So i guess it will be pain meds and Physical therapy for the rest of my life but i still get around pretty good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GOOD LUCK and if u have any questions u can email me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (TRY not to have any fusions if u can!!!!)

I would avoid surgery if possible. My sister in law had back surgery they had to put screws in her back and she stays in pain. She goes to pain management and doesn't exercise the way she should but most of the time she just does not feel like it.
